Just so you can get an idea of what it’s like for me between listening to High German vs a dialect like Schwaebisch or Hohenlohisch (which is what Thorsten speaks) I thought that I would use a video comparison.

When I hear High German….my brain interprets the language like this (my brain is the subtitles)

By the way, if you haven’t seen The Lives of Others – I highly recommend it.  It’s fantastic!

But when I hear someone speak in a dialect…I feel like Liz Lemon….
