What is a street team? It’s one of the most effective forms of guerilla marketing that’s out there. The idea is that you literally have a team out in the street helping you promote your work. This is great way for friends, family, and superfans to help get involved with marketing your book.
So how do you go about it?
- Decide how many people you want on your street team.
Some authors go for 20 while others go up to 100+. There are pros and cons to each, but you have to decide for yourself what you want (20 doesn’t have as much reach as 100 but you can have a sense camaraderie and your fans can get more 1 on 1 time with you – the author. 100 has a huge reach but the fans can easily feel lost in the crowd).
- Gather your street team in one place.
Most will recommend that you use a private Facebook group (I know some of you no longer use Facebook, but it’s the most effective way to do it).

- Decide on challenges
Host weekly challenges for your street team for potential prizes. For example – your first challenge could be the read the book and leave a review (yes, your street team should get a free copy of your book – how else are they going to promote it if they have no idea what they’re promoting?). Your street team can also be first in line to beta read your next book! The physical prizes can be a themed mug (like my I ❤ the God King mug from my presale giveaway! (LINK)). Another challenge can be to have your team go to their local library or bookstore to convince them to stock the book, or have their own friends and family pre-order through the bookstore/library – this’ll help bring your book into regular establishments. Let the challenge run for a week and then announce the winner. Remember, your team is giving up their free time to help you so make sure you keep them happy!
