Three Days, Three Quotes Challenge – Day 2

It’s Thursday, as well as my second day of the quotes challenge, for which Ami at Ami im Schwabenland nominated me.

The rules:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you – Danke schön, Ami!
  2. Post a different quote for three consecutive days.
  3. Nominate three bloggers each day.

So my quote today is a lot heavier than yesterdays (and wordier).

I originally posted this photo a few years ago when I first wrote about my epic failed attempt at skiing. Good times (not really). It’s a great quote for anyone trying to face a fear.

Any fear.

The quote comes from the beginning of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic Dune when the main character, Paul Atreides, is forced to go through a trial that could literally mean life or death. Obviously he survives…cause, you know….it’s the beginning of the book.

Dune was the first real science fiction novel that I read (at the tender age of 15). It is still cited as the best-selling science fiction novel in history and it’s easy to see why. The novels (23 and counting) span a history of about 15,000 years tackling issues of politics, religion, social struggles, and technology – with an emphasis on ecology and evolution of a planet (mainly Dune – Arrakis). Needless to say, it’s a lot. I haven’t read all of them (like only 2.5 – I never finished Children of Dune) but the first novel is still the best.

*sigh*

If you don’t feel like reading such a hefty book (series), I highly recommend the SciFi (now SyFy) miniseries of both Dune and Children of Dune. Others will try and convince you to watch David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune – which is is great in terms of visuals and cast (hello both Sting and Kyle MacLachlan!), but a lot of stuff was changed (especially the ending GRRRRRRR!) to the point that I have a hard time watching it (even though I have…..multiple times).

Judge all you want, I still have the hots for Kyle MacLachlan!

Anyhoo, I’ll leave you today with a video clip of the 1984 version with a young (and still hot) Kyle MacLachlan.

Bis Morgen!
