Back on June 17th, you may have seen the following Google Doodle. If you didn’t well, maybe it was just in Germany.
I thought it was fitting to bring up Die Krake Paul with the World Cup
still in process.
Who was he? Well, he was a psychic octopus, of course!
He was housed in the Sea Life Center in Oberhausen, Germany. He was given the task of predicting the winning team of football (soccer)
games that Germany played against. He successful predicted four of
Germany’s six games in the Euro Games 2008 and all seven in the 2010 World Cup.
But how did he make his choice known? The keepers would place two
identical boxes filled with a mussel or an oyster (both boxes always
had the same things). The only difference was that each box had a
different flag of the competing teams. The decision was made based on the box he ate out of first.
Pretty cool, no?
Unfortunately for Paul and gamblers everywhere, he died a few months after the 2010 World Cup ended. He apparently died of old age but there are conspiracy theories saying that there was a hit on the cephalopod but I guess we will never now!
Until Monday!
